Overview
TB-500 is a synthetic version of the naturally occurring peptide Thymosin Beta-4, a 43-amino acid protein expressed in virtually all human cell types. It promotes tissue repair, reduces inflammation, and improves flexibility. Widely used in veterinary medicine (equine) and increasingly studied for human applications.
How it works
Sequesters G-actin monomers and promotes actin polymerization, which is critical for cell migration during tissue repair. Upregulates cell migration and proliferation, promotes angiogenesis, decreases inflammation by downregulating inflammatory cytokines, and reduces scarring by modulating extracellular matrix deposition.
Half-life and peak
Plasma half-life estimated at approximately 24 hours. The protein is rapidly distributed to tissues. Full-length Thymosin Beta-4 (TB4) has a longer effective duration (~60 hours) due to intracellular reservoir effects.
What it is studied for
Wound healing, cardiac tissue repair post-infarction, corneal repair, hair regrowth, reduction of adhesions post-surgery, anti-inflammatory effects.
Research status
Investigational — Phase 1/2 trials completed for cardiac repair. Used off-label in regenerative medicine. FDA Orphan Drug designation for epidermolysis bullosa (RegeneRx). Not approved for general use.
