Overview

Epitalon (Epithalon / Epithalone) is a synthetic tetrapeptide (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) based on the natural pineal peptide epithalamin. It was developed by Professor Vladimir Khavinson at the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology. The primary research interest is telomerase activation and its potential anti-aging effects.

How it works

Activates telomerase (hTERT) in somatic cells, potentially extending telomere length — a key biomarker of cellular aging. Stimulates pineal gland function and normalizes melatonin secretion patterns that decline with age. Regulates neuroendocrine signaling and may reset age-related epigenetic changes. Acts as a bioregulator that restores gene expression patterns.

Half-life and peak

Very short plasma half-life estimated at 15–30 minutes due to rapid peptide degradation. Bioregulatory effects persist well beyond plasma clearance — Khavinson proposes 10-day cycled protocols because the gene-regulatory cascade continues for weeks. Typically administered as 10-day courses with 4–6 month intervals.

What it is studied for

Telomerase activation, telomere elongation, pineal gland function (melatonin regulation), circadian rhythm normalization, aging biomarker reversal, neuroendocrine aging.

Research status

Published animal studies showing lifespan extension and telomerase activation. Human studies limited to Khavinson's research group (St. Petersburg). No FDA-approved indication. No large RCTs. Used in longevity medicine off-label.
