Overview

BPC-157 (Body Protection Compound-157) is a pentadecapeptide derived from a protein found in human gastric juice. It has shown significant tissue-healing properties in preclinical studies, particularly for tendons, ligaments, muscles, and the GI tract. It remains investigational with no FDA-approved indication.

How it works

Promotes angiogenesis via VEGF upregulation, modulates nitric oxide pathways (both NOS systems), enhances growth hormone receptor expression, stimulates tendon fibroblast migration, and protects endothelial cells. Acts on the FAK-paxillin pathway crucial for cell migration during wound healing. Also influences dopaminergic and serotonergic systems.

Half-life and peak

Estimated half-life of approximately 4–6 hours based on peptide stability data. No formal human PK studies published. Peak activity estimated at 1–2 hours post-injection. Oral bioavailability has been demonstrated in animal models due to gastric origin stability.

What it is studied for

Tendon and ligament repair, GI mucosal healing (ulcers, IBD models), neuroprotection, muscle regeneration, angiogenesis modulation.

Research status

Preclinical — extensive animal data across 100+ studies. No completed human clinical trials. Several Phase 1/2 trials registered for IBD and wound healing. No regulatory approval.
